Timmons Group is honored to announce that three of its projects were recognized in this year’s Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA) Engineering Awards Program. VTCA is the commonwealth association dedicated exclusively to the transportation construction industry, serving the companies that plan, design, build, and maintain Virginia’s transportation systems. The awards were presented during the VTCA Consultant Forum in Richmond for Fall Line Trail Northern Section, Fredericksburg Downtown Study, and VCU 7th Street Pedestrian Bridge.
Fall Line Trail Northern Section earned the Less than $20 Million Design Build Category Award, delivering approximately 4.5 miles of shared-use trail connecting Ashland to Henrico County through Hanover County. As the first VDOT-administered segment of the planned 43-mile regional trail, the project establishes a critical link supporting pedestrian and bicycle mobility across multiple jurisdictions while advancing regional connectivity. Timmons Group served as lead designer under a design-build delivery with Branch, managing planning, environmental coordination, and multidisciplinary design of the trail, bridge, and supporting infrastructure, including a 14-foot bridge over the Chickahominy River.
Recognized as the Planning Project or Study Category Award winner, the Fredericksburg Downtown Study evaluated converting downtown one-way streets to two-way operation to support a safer, more walkable, and economically vibrant city center. Timmons Group analyzed 16 intersections, integrating traffic operations, speed and volume data, pedestrian and bicycle activity, and stakeholder input, to deliver data-driven recommendations tailored to the City’s historic downtown environment and 10% concept plans that advance Complete Streets citywide and provide a replicable model for right-sizing urban street networks nationwide.
The 7th Street/I-95 Interchange Improvements project received an Honorable Mention in the Less than $20 Million Design Bid Build Category and Special Recognition for Innovation. Supporting the continued expansion of VCU Health’s downtown Richmond campus, the project replaced a surface lot with a 1,361-space parking structure and added a 14-foot pedestrian bridge over I-95 to address a longstanding connectivity gap between VCU Health facilities. Timmons Group led planning, operational analysis, and roadway design, applying advanced traffic modeling to improve reliability across local and interstate networks.
