Overview
Timmons Group is providing engineering and construction phase services for the VCU Health Services I Lot Parking Deck Design project, including a pedestrian bridge and ramp widening over I-95.
The bridge design, finalized after exploring various configurations, features continuous steel girders for minimal structure depth, integral abutments, and hammerhead piers to address utility clearances.
Timmons Group also delivered roadway design for on-ramp and intersection improvements, alongside surveys, utility location, geotechnical, and environmental services. Construction began in February 2025, with the bridge expected to open by year-end.
The project involved extensive coordination with VDOT, Richmond’s Public Works Department, Dominion Energy, and the US Federal Highway Administration. A key component included traffic analysis for the surrounding roadway network, utilizing advanced VISSIM modeling and predictive crash analysis.
Timmons Group also prepared traffic signal designs and plans for bridge and ramp widening to support improved access and safety. The project replaced a surface lot with a 1,361-space parking deck and engaged stakeholders through detailed planning and reporting.
