Overview

The Green Ridge Recreation Center is located off of Woodhaven Road near the intersection of Interstates 81 and 591 in North Roanoke County. The multi-generational recreation center serves as that anchor and entrance to the new 200-acre business campus designed to attract upscale corporations to Roanoke County and provides tax revenue through economic development and tourism.

The 76,000-square-foot building includes a double gymnasium, fitness center, two aerobics rooms, three multi-purpose program rooms, and an indoor aquatics center with an adjoining birthday party room. In addition, the Center includes a 20,000-square-foot outdoor leisure pool with large slides and a lazy river dubbed “Splash Valley.” The building also includes an indoor walking track that offers sweeping vistas of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Timmons Group also designed the Valley Point Parkway utility upgrades and extensions (water and sewer) that serves the recreation center and the initial tenants of the neighboring business campus. The project has received LEED® Gold certification.

The Virginia Economic Developers Association (VEDA) announced the selection of Roanoke County as a winner of the 2010 Community Economic Development Awards for a municipality with the population of 40,001 and 100,000 people. Nominated by Doug Chittum, Director of Economic Development, Roanoke County, the submitted project touched on all four categories of the CEDA award, incorporating Business Retention/Expansion, Community Development, Business Attraction, and Community Involvement. Roanoke County’s featured project was the Green Ridge Recreation Center, a publicly-owned and developed multi-generational facility designed to anchor a proposed new business park and serve the growing needs of the community and region. Not just another recreation center, this facility will serve as a catalyst for new economic development opportunities throughout the entire Roanoke Valley.
