Sustainable Stormwater Design and Grant Support for Frontage Road Corridor

Timmons Group provided both engineering and grant support services for the Frontage Road Grass Channel Project in the Town of Ashland. In partnership with the Town’s Department of Public Works, Timmons Group led the design of a green infrastructure retrofit along a prominent corridor between Route 1 (Washington Highway) and Frontage Road, just south of Maple Street. The project was completed in 2024. Timmons Group’s engineering team conducted topographic and underground utility surveys, performed test pits to locate waterline depths, and developed full construction documents for a grass channel designed to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality.

The design included compost-amended soils, native grasses, and gravel check dams to slow runoff, promote infiltration, and enhance pollutant removal. In addition, 39 native trees were planted along the corridor to provide aesthetic and ecological benefits. Timmons Group supported the Town in securing funding through the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Green Streets, Green Jobs, Green Towns (G3) program by preparing the grant application, including pollutant reduction estimates and alignment with Chesapeake Bay Program BMPs. The Town also received a Virginia Department of Forestry grant to fund the street tree planting. The completed project enhances stormwater management, improves the visual appeal of a high-traffic area, and serves as a replicable model for small-town green infrastructure.
