Overview
The Secretariat Racing into History project celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest racehorses of all time while creating a new civic landmark in the heart of Ashland, Virginia. Carrying forth the design intent developed by a talented team of designers, artists, historians, and community advocates, Timmons Group provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the design of Reynolds Family Plaza, the permanent home of the monumental bronze sculpture honoring Secretariat and his enduring connection to Virginia.
Centered around an iconic 21-foot-long, 11.5-foot-tall bronze sculpture by acclaimed artist Jocelyn Russell, the project transforms a prominent downtown site into a memorable public destination that honors Secretariat’s remarkable achievements and Virginia heritage. Timmons Group helped shape a plaza experience that is welcoming, accessible, and reflective of the power and movement of the legendary Triple Crown champion. Carefully crafted paving, gathering spaces, lighting, and interpretive elements combine to create an engaging environment for residents and visitors alike.
Located adjacent to Ashland’s railroad corridor and within walking distance of downtown attractions, the completed plaza serves as both a community gathering space and a tourism destination. The design balances civic placemaking with storytelling, creating a lasting tribute that strengthens Ashland’s identity while celebrating one of Virginia’s most beloved sporting icons. Today, Secretariat Racing Into History stands as a vibrant public landmark where history, art, and community come together to inspire visitors from across the Commonwealth and beyond.
