Overview

River City Sportsplex, owned and operated by the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation, is home to one of the largest collections of synthetic fields in the United States. This 115-acre, year-round, multi-sport, state-of-the-art athletic complex hosts some of the most elite sporting events.

The County hired Timmons Group to oversee the Master Plan process to design a multi-generational state of the art regional and neighborhood park in the heart of the sportsplex. Planned amenities in the 8-acre park include both active and passive recreation with a theme celebrating the James River ecosystem. The master plan focuses on the development of six main areas of the park, all connected by a network of pedestrian paths and plazas. An interactive splash pad pays homage to the Fall Line in the James River. The 2-5 yr. old and 5-12 yr. old play parks take you on an adventure through the rock pools and wetland areas of the river ecosystem. Most significant, the iconic play park takes you on a journey to the rookeries of the Great Blue Heron. Following the site’s ridgeline and subtle slopes, the iconic playground provides custom features including bridges, towers, slides, and poured-in-place hills. A central plaza includes a variety of unique seating and restroom pavilion alongside an expansive central lawn. Lastly, a fitness park provides space for teens and adults to participate in active recreation.
