Overview

The Canal Walk Improvements in the City of Richmond are the extension of streetscape improvements along the north side of the Kanawha and Haxall canals and the areas surrounding the historic Reynolds Metals facilities extending from 13th Street to 11th Street. Timmons Group partnered with a Richmond-based architect to provide surveying and civil design services for the City of Richmond’s Department of Economic and Community Development.

The project involves design of an elevated walkway along one portion of the extension and a slab-on-grade with retaining walls for an adjacent portion of the extension. The elevated walkway utilizes a one-way concrete slab connecting to a new building on one end and a structural steel system that bears on the existing canal wall on the other end. The project involves re-using existing site retaining walls, designing new retaining walls, and a structural transition between the slab-on-grade and elevated concrete slab.

Additional improvements along the interconnected canals include new ADA access, lighting, sidewalks, drinking fountains, street trees, landscapes, pathways, and access stairs. In addition to greatly improving the aesthetic of the canal, the project creates new and unique ways for people to access the waters of the canal, enhancing its use as an amenity for City residents.
