Overview
Timmons Group provided structural design services for the rehabilitation of docks, landings, and portals at the Presquile National Wildlife Refuge ferry service on the James River in Chester, Virginia. The project, managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, was part of the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
The scope of services mainly consisted of abutment stabilization. As the ferry ramp abutments on each side of the river are starting to lean forward towards the river, Timmons Group inspected these abutments after the ramps were removed and provided a design and detailing for the remediation.
Remediation included excavating behind the abutments, using a helical tieback system, installing riprap, and installing flowable fill to secure the abutment from further sloughing. A dolphin pier was also designed and detailed as part of this project. Timmons Group also provided Quality Assurance Inspection throughout the construction and responded to contractor questions through the RFI process.
The project was successfully completed on time and under budget, meeting all structural requirements and ensuring the continued safe operation of the ferry service.
