Overview

Timmons Group has been providing structural engineering services to the City of Richmond’s Parks & Recreation Department under an on-call contract with the City for over 8 years. These services range from complex bridge designs and bridge inspections all the way to small light pole foundations or foundation designs for playground equipment. The following are a few examples of tasks.

First Break Rapids Scour Remediation
Timmons Group developed construction plans for stabilizing the eroding bank at the First Break Rapids. We performed a site survey to verify erosion limits and confirm that the proposed rip rap slope protection is adequate. Timmons Group delivered a final cost estimate and acquired a wetland impact permit. A wetland delineation was also performed in accordance with the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) Wetland Delineation Manual and appropriate Regional Supplement. Timmons Group facilitated the confirmation of wetland locations through submittal of a Jurisdictional Determination (JD) package to the COE.

RMS Building Shoring
Timmons Group designed and coordinated the work required to develop a wall stabilization bracing system for this historic structure and keep it from collapsing. This work included site visits to collect initial measurements and photos, as well as geotechnical borings and the development of a geotechnical engineering report. Timmons Group also utilized laser scan information to create a 3D model that was used to develop 2D elevations
and sections of the site feature. Preliminary sketches were developed for the proposed structural bracing system and foundation, along with a cost estimate. After review with the city and gaining concurrence, Timmons Group developed stamped structural drawings for the bracing system and foundations, along with an updated cost estimate. In addition, Timmons Group provided a Structural Test and Special Inspections program to be used during construction.

Pedestrian Bridge Evaluations
Timmons Group evaluated 28 public pedestrian bridges in the City of Richmond in order to recommend repairs and frequency of inspection in accordance with VDOT requirements. The City’s request to perform a full safety inspection of 10 bridges, which were either put on a 12-month inspection cycle or exhibiting heavy deterioration of a critical component, was a consequence of this previous work. These bridges consist of public park bridges intended for pedestrian or combined pedestrian and vehicular use. The bridges vary in type, including a 40-span simply supported
steel bridge, a 55-span suspended bridge, a through truss bridge, multiple steel through girder bridges, and a concrete spillway. Timmons Group coordinated under-bridge access, scheduling for equipment and railroad flaggers, as well as obtained right of entry permits from CSX Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad. Following field inspections, Timmons Group completed a bridge safety inspection report and worked with the City to compile and review comments.
