Overview

As part of a multi-year on-call contract, Timmons Group has been working with the City of Roanoke, Virginia to provide periodic inspections and reports for a variety of transportation structures. Structures under this contract include 120 bridges, culverts, and tunnels and 14 overhead signs, inspected on a rotating schedule in accordance with city, state, and federal guidelines. To date, Timmons Group has performed safety inspections on 38 structures. These structures included concrete slab bridges, multi-cell concrete box culverts, steel girder bridges, prestressed concrete girder bridges, fracture critical steel truss pedestrian bridges, a concrete pedestrian bridge, corrugated metal pipe arch culverts, and a five-story concrete fire training tower structure.

Bridge safety inspections have been performed to meet all NBIS requirements, and reports prepared in accordance with VDOT and NBIS requirements and standards. As a part of this contract, Timmons Group has also performed load rating analysis on 16 structures. Typical structures rated haves included concrete slab bridges, multi-span steel girder bridges, three-sided concrete frame structures, and concrete box culverts.

The City also uses Timmons Group’s complex analysis capabilities for the 3D finite element analysis of two spandrel arch bridges: Walnut Avenue over Norfolk Southern Railroad and Memorial Avenue over the Roanoke River. Accurate detailed models were created and loaded to arrive at the carrying capacity of the 100-year-old structures. Engineering judgment was utilized to fill in the missing information that was not available on this historic structure.
