Overview
Timmons Group was selected by the City of Covington to provide engineering services on an as-needed basis for large and small projects throughout the City, including civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, traffic engineering, survey, geotechnical services, environmental services, and construction management. Projects have included:
Bridge & Culvert Safety Inspection Services
Timmons Group provided safety inspections for several City structures including the following:
- S. Carpenter Dr. (Rt. 18) over CSX railroad: 3-span continuous steel girder bridge
- S. Carpenter Drive (Rt. 18) over the Jackson River: 5-span steel girder bridge
- Rayon Dr. over the Jackson River: 7-span steel girder bridge
- E. Hawthorne Street over CSX railroad: single span through truss bridge
- S. Durant Road over the Jackson River: 4-span continuous steel plate girder bridge
Services included bridge inspections meeting all requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Additionally, as required by NBIS and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the bridges and culverts were inventoried, inspected, and appraised. Timmons Group reviewed all available plans and previous inspection reports, and as necessary, coordinated under-bridge access scheduling for equipment and railroad flaggers, as well as obtained right of entry permits from CSX Railroad. Following field inspections, Timmons Group completed a VDOT bridge safety inspection report and worked with the City to compile and review comments.
Culvert Safety Inspections
Timmons Group provided bridge safety inspections for three City culverts including the following:
- N. Alleghany Ave. (US Rt. 220) over Dry Run: triple reinforced concrete box culvert
- S. Carpenter Dr. (Rt. 18) over Mill Branch: quadruple reinforced concrete box culvert
- S. Carpenter Dr. (Rt. 18) over Mill Branch: triple reinforced concrete box culvert
- Thacker Ave. over Harmon’s Run: triple reinforced concrete box culvert
Services included routine culvert inspections meeting all NBIS requirements. Additionally as required by NBIS and VDOT, the culverts were inventoried, inspected, and appraised. Inspections involved element level inspection with documention including field notes and photographs. Timmons Group reviewed all available plans and previous inspection reports, and following field inspections, Timmons Group completed a VDOT bridge safety inspection report and worked with the City to compile and review comments.
Bridge Priority Repair List
Similar to the repair database created for the City of Richmond, Timmons Group also created a repair list for City of Covington. This list groups together all of the recommended repairs from recent bridge inspections based on priority level. This allows the City to quickly assess the most critical repair needs and identify upcoming routine.
