Integrated Engineering and Grant Support for Urban Stream Restoration at VSU
Timmons Group provided both engineering and grant support services for the Fleets Branch Stream Restoration Project at Virginia State University (VSU). In partnership with the City of Petersburg, Timmons Group led the development of design plans for the restoration of 2,027 linear feet of degraded urban stream using Natural Channel Design. The engineering team prepared construction documents, pollutant load reduction estimates, and specifications to address severe streambank erosion threatening campus infrastructure.
Timmons Group’s team also played a critical role in securing project funding. They supported the City in successfully obtaining both National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s Stormwater Local Assistance Fund (SLAF) grants by preparing compelling applications that detailed the project scope, pollutant reduction estimates, and alignment with Chesapeake Bay Program-approved BMPs.
As of June 2025, Phase 2 of the project is currently under construction and is expected to reduce annual pollutant loads by 476.70 lbs of nitrogen, 118.53 lbs of phosphorus, and 39,298.21 lbs of sediment, helping both VSU and the City meet MS4 permit requirements.
Funding Sources: National Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), VA DEQ Stormwater Local Assistance Fund (SLAF)
