Overview

The Colonial Williamsburg Lafayette Arrival Area reimagines the visitor experience with a pedestrian-focused gateway that seamlessly blends functionality, sustainability, and landscape design. Anchored by a central plaza with a bus drop off, seating, and an arrival building housing ticketing, offices, and restrooms, the project creates a welcoming first impression for guests.

Designed around four distinct landscape zones, the arrival area incorporates parking with extensive use of permeable paving to support sustainable stormwater management. A collaborative planting approach between Colonial Williamsburg Foundation horticulturists and the design team introduced a diverse palette of native plant species that reflects the local character of Williamsburg.

Thoughtfully crafted details including paver walkways, shaded paths, flowering gardens, and canopy trees shape the arrival experience, guiding visitors from parking areas into Colonial Williamsburg through a landscape that is both memorable and distinctly rooted in place.
