Overview

Located in the center of downtown Bowling Green, the Caroline County courthouse was originally constructed in 1835 on the present courthouse green and has been expanded several times through the years. The existing building contained about 20,250 gross square feet of space on two floor levels (including the basement) and was generally in fair condition.

The courthouse housed the courts and their associated clerks as well as the Court Services Unit, Commissioner of the Revenue, Public Works Administration and Planning and Community Development.

The county purchased property across Ennis Street from the existing Courthouse on which the new courthouse was constructed. The existing courthouse was renovated and expanded to add space for the Circuit Court, Circuit Court Clerk and court security functions.

To maximize the area available for court use in the courthouse, the county relocated the Public Works Administration and Planning and Community Development offices from its basement to the present Social Services building.

To solve the long-term space needs, the county constructed a new 22,300 square foot General District Courts building and renovated and expanded the existing courthouse. The new courts building will house the General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations (J&DR) Courts, the General District and J&DR Court Clerks, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Court Services Unit.
