Overview

Timmons Group led the design team in the programming, site selection (11 sites considered), and master planning for Richmond’s showcase sports medicine venue. The City fast-tracked the project, setting a six-month timeline from site selection to turn over, and Timmons Group delivered the project on schedule as part of a City of Richmond on-call contract. Seeking to balance the needs for urban green space with the programming of a major sports team’s training facilities and a sports medicine complex, the Timmons Group listened to ideas from the owners, reviewers, and community members. The final design encompasses a diverse array of uses across several distinct environments.

Three distinct zones define the site. Located at the front of the site, the Bon Secours Wellness Center is a year-round youth and men’s wellness facility that transforms seasonally into the Redskins Training Facility. Beyond the Center are the Redskins Training Fields, two NFL competition fields and one drill field. Upwards of 160,000 fans visit the site during the training season, and spectators can take in Redskins training or a concert from an amphitheater adjacent to the fields. Beyond the amphitheater lies an urban park, where over 36 species of native plants and a water feature form a natural escape just blocks from some of Richmond’s mostly densely populated neighborhoods. A system of ADA-compliant stone walking paths, outdoor fitness equipment, and musical play equipment make the site accessible and enjoyable for all visitors. At the Redskins Training Center entertainment, outdoor recreation, and medical facilities converge to form a unique regional destination and exciting visitor experience in the heart of the city.
