Overview

Dominion contracted with Timmons Group to provide GPS, GIS and consulting services to field locate and verify Dominion’s pole inventory and joint-use pole ownership in all common Dominion, Verizon, and Sprint service territories. These two surveys consisted of approximately 680,000 field located utility poles throughout Virginia and Northeast North Carolina.

Additionally, our GIS field inventory personnel performed in-field adjustment of GPS located poles to Dominion’s GIS Landbase using ArcGIS-based applications developed by Timmons Group to support joint-use collection and quality control activities.

During the full survey phase, Timmons Group identified and captured visual locations relative to Dominion’s Landbase, GPS locations, joint-use attributes, pole and attachment attributes and pole ownership determinations of all Dominion-owned poles and telecommunications-owned joint-use poles within the common Verizon/Dominion and Sprint/Dominion retail service areas. Collected data was converted directly into ESRI’s personal Geodatabase environment, as well as Trimble SSF file format, into batch Geodatabase deliverables.

Deliverables

GIS and associated databases were provided to Dominion Energy and Verizon on a weekly basis and were subjected to stringent quality assurance standards for attribute and pole count accuracy.

  • GPS field location of Dominion/Sprint joint-use poles within the overlapping service areas
  • Adjusted Esri shapefiles of Dominion pole locations relative to Dominion’s GIS Landbase
  • DVCollect prototyping and testing
  • Technical reports and documentation to support verification and inventorying activities
