Overview
The project is located at the historic Woolen Mills site in Charlottesville, Virginia, a former industrial complex that operated as a working mill from the 1790s through the 1960s. Nestled alongside Moores Creek, a tributary of the Rivanna River, the property is traversed by a short segment of the Rivanna Trail, which crosses the creek via a pedestrian footbridge.
Previously, access to the bridge was provided by a non–ADA-compliant staircase constructed several years ago. In response to requests from Albemarle County Parks & Recreation and local community stakeholders, Timmons Group developed a fully ADA-accessible ramp, naturally bermed into the landscape. This new ramp not only improves accessibility but also creates a level, enclosed space that can serve as a flexible venue for local businesses, community gatherings, and wedding events.
Timmons Group delivered an environmentally responsive design within a designated floodway. Throughout the project, our team supported Albemarle County Parks & Recreation with budgeting, scheduling, and construction administration, ensuring a smooth and successful implementation.
