Overview

Using bond referendum funding, Henrico County hired Timmons Group to design a state-of-the-art playground and spray park within existing Tuckahoe Park. As an added asset to the existing park, the new 2 ½ acre playground and spray park will be located north of the existing baseball fields and will be connected to the park trail system. The play and spray areas will be organized around a central plaza that will feature raised plant beds, a seat wall, artificial turf with informal seating, and a restroom.  The modern playgrounds will include a 2-5 age playground and a 5-12 age playground and will include accessible play systems, and freestanding and inclusive play equipment.  Shade structures and pavilions will border each playground and will be surrounded by artificial turf providing additional opportunities for passive and active play.

The spray park will include upper and lower areas commencing at a “headwater” boulder water-source in the upper spray area that will cascade into a shallow play creek that will flow through the spray deck, down a wide stair to a lower spray deck and will terminate at a water play system that will allow children to manipulate the flow of water with a variety of fun-filled play elements.  Along the edges of spray park pavilions and shade structures will provide seating, while a seat wall will define the edges of the upper spray deck. Every part of the spray park is designed to encourage play and help to develop cognitive and fine motor skills.
