Rewarding, exciting, challenging, and diverse are just a few of the words our summer interns used to describe their experience at Timmons Group. In recognition of National Intern Day, we’re taking the opportunity to recognize the hard work, curiosity, and fresh perspectives these students bring to our firm.
This year, we welcomed 45 interns who are exploring careers across a variety of disciplines, including civil engineering, technology, land surveying, and marketing. Throughout the summer, they’ve gained hands-on experience by supporting meaningful projects, collaborating with experienced professionals, and seeing firsthand how their work contributes to the communities we serve.
We asked a few of these talented future professionals to reflect on their internship experience, and here’s what they had to say!
“Being on-site allowed me to see different types of infrastructure that I’ve only seen on a projector,” Jordan said. “It wasn’t until I went on a site visit that I saw the pumps and chlorination building, overflow weir, the SCADA system, and numerous other aspects that we don’t cover in school, which helped me connect design to constructability and better understand real-world project constraints.”
“I’m now comfortable accessing and contributing to various projects using Autodesk Civil 3D, something which felt incredibly daunting for me when I started this internship back in late May,” said Lucas. “Far and away, the best part of my experience at Timmons Group is the people I’m surrounded by every day, who have been knowledgeable, patient, and wonderfully kind to me as they teach me what it means to work in land development.”
“The most valuable lessons I’ve gained are learning how to read and interpret plans more confidently while understanding how design decisions move through drafting, redlines, submittals, and review comments,” said Timothy. “Being on-site helped me see how field data is collected and later turned into usable design information. Getting to assist with surveying and seeing how existing site conditions connect back to CAD drawings and design work made the engineering process feel much more tangible.”
“I can use almost every Adobe tool at a much more advanced level than before, and many of the marketing technologies I work with now are ones I had little to no knowledge of before coming to Timmons Group,” said Abigail. “The highlight of being an intern here has been the real-world experience. I feel wiser and more prepared after these few months. I love my team and getting new projects, and I find I’m more eager for my future!”
“My team was very welcoming and included me in a variety of projects, site visits, and meetings, allowing me to gain valuable experience, which strengthened my understanding of the different stages of land development,” says Tyler. “I’m proud to have contributed to many different projects, but I’m most proud of a layout exhibit I created for a project in Mecklenburg County. My team leader gave me free rein to design the site and determine where different site improvements should be located.”
“I’m most proud of contributing to a site exhibit for the North Carolina Farmers Market Complex, where I had the opportunity to draft a layout, apply my ideas, and see my work contribute to a real project,” said Troy. “Everything I can do in Civil 3D is something I learned here, making it one of the biggest skills I’ve gained since my first day.”
“What challenged me the most was learning to manage my time while working on multiple projects simultaneously,” Eric said. “I overcame this by asking questions whenever possible to ensure I’m using my time efficiently.”
We couldn’t be prouder of the contributions our interns made this summer. Their curiosity, work ethic, and professionalism make it clear that the future of our industry is in great hands. We’re excited to watch these rising professionals continue to grow.
