Overview
Timmons Group is currently providing on-call structural engineering consulting services for Dominion Energy Solutions across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Services support the structural feasibility of photovoltaic (PV) solar panel installations on existing public and commercial building rooftops. Scope includes field inspections, as-built verification, structural analysis, and building code compliance reviews for life safety and serviceability. To date, Timmons Group has performed assessments at a variety of educational, recreational, and municipal facilities.
Discovery STEM Academy, Newport News, VA
Timmons Group assisted Dominion Energy in enhancing Discovery Stem Academy’s power supply by providing a structural feasibility assessment for the school’s rooftop PV system. The roof structure consisted of standard and special steel joists at various framing zones, supported by joist girders and non-composite steel beams. Timmons Group validated the existing structural capacity based on environmental loads and provided load allowance guidance for proper panel installation.
Tuckahoe Little League Field House, Henrico, VA
Timmons Group provided a structural feasibility assessment for the Little League Sports Complex field house. The building is mainly comprised of a prefabricated metal building with built-up steel plate portal frames. The roof structure includes a structural roof deck and cold-formed purlins. Timmons Group assessed the roof system’s load capacity to support solar panel loads and provided specific guidance for feasible panel locations.
Fairfax City Public Schools, Fairfax, VA
Timmons Group performed structural assessments for nine schools throughout Fairfax City. The effort required a review of over 20 sets of structural documents, ranging from 1960-era codes to present-day requirements. Timmons Group validated an allowable load for solar panels and provided special considerations to the owner and the client.
