Celebrating National Intern Day with Timmons Group’s 2025 Summer Interns

Every summer, Timmons Group welcomes students pursuing careers in land surveying, civil engineering, design, or technology to apply to our internship program. These emerging professionals join us to gain hands-on experience, explore the diverse industries we serve, and develop valuable skills that will support their career journeys while enjoying the benefits of our unique company culture along the way.

In celebration of National Intern Day, we’re highlighting interns from our Class of 2025 and their experiences this summer. From project site visits and technical mentorship to team outings and networking events, our summer interns had a full schedule packed with exciting opportunities and meaningful professional growth. Let’s hear what they have to say!

“This internship gave me a deeper, more focused understanding of what civil engineers do on a daily basis,” said Connor. “Before this experience, I had only seen a broad overview of potential career paths through my coursework. Now, I have a much clearer idea of the work I may pursue in the future and what it takes to succeed in this field. Being able to connect classroom concepts to real-world projects and grow my skills in a practical setting was invaluable.”

An intern in a James Madison t-shirt, a neon green vest, and a fishing hat. He stands in the woods with a tripod behind him. On the bottom is text stating: "DARNELL DESROSIERS" with the Timmons Group logo.

“Being on site allowed me to connect what I’ve learned to real-world applications,” Darnell said. “It helped me understand the ‘why’ behind engineering decisions and brought clarity to topics I’d only seen in class.” When asked about his most memorable moment, Darnell shared, “It wasn’t just one moment, but instead it was the number of people and places I encountered. I didn’t realize how beautiful Virginia is—not just its natural landscape, but also the kindness I was shown by so many people on site.”

An intern wearing a Coastal Carolina hoodie posed for a professional photo. At the bottom is text that states: "KAITLYN HOLDER" with the Timmons Group logo.

“The culture at Timmons Group is very collaborative and values integrity, work-life balance, and employee growth. It’s a supportive environment where learning and development are encouraged.” Kaitlyn said. “My team made me feel welcomed and included from the start, inviting me to meetings and site visits and always being open to my questions.”

An intern working at his desk, looking at one of his three monitors. At the bottom is text that states: "JORDAN WALKER" with the Timmons Group logo at the bottom.

“This summer, I participated in a range of professional development opportunities,” said Jordan. I received valuable CAD mentorship from project managers and engineers, and gained technical knowledge through real project experience. I also attended networking events such as Days on the Range and Kona Ice Wednesdays, where I met many professionals in the Architecture and civil engineering industry. These opportunities helped me to become a better CAD designer and a more well-rounded engineer.”

“I’ve learned a lot during my time in the public land development team,” Ryan said. “The most valuable skills I gained were both technical and interpersonal. I strengthened my understanding of site design processes like grading and utility layout, and I learned how to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team. Working closely with a team of talented engineers has helped me communicate ideas more clearly and effectively adapt to feedback. I also got to see the full lifecycle of land development projects in action and apply engineering principles along the way.”

“The highlight of my internship was creating a layout exhibit for a client, and being able to say that I had done work that made it into a client’s hands,” said Layne. “It was also very cool to contribute to a couple of projects in the early stages of development at VMI in Lexington, Virginia.”

We couldn’t be prouder of the contributions our interns made this summer. Their curiosity, work ethic, and professionalism make it clear that the future of our industry is in great hands. We’re excited to watch these rising professionals grow as they continue pursuing careers in the A/E/C industry.

Summer internships are the perfect opportunity for students to gain valuable job experience, fulfill college requirements, and invest in their futures. At Timmons Group, our internship program is designed to help students gain essential industry skills, explore potential career paths, and develop the confidence to thrive in a professional setting.
