Celebrating Champions: A Look Back at UVA’s Birdwood Golf Course Renovation

With the 2025 NCAA golf season wrapped and champions crowned, we’re reflecting on a standout project from the Timmons Group portfolio that helped lay the foundation for a historic year in Virginia athletics: the Birdwood Golf Course renovation at the University of Virginia.

In collaboration with Love Golf Design, Timmons Group provided comprehensive civil engineering services for the transformation of this historic course—home to UVA Golf since 1984. Our team was responsible for stormwater infrastructure, erosion and sediment control design and specialized detailing for pond dredging, dam reinforcement, and outfall upgrades. The project encompassed roughly 40 to 50 acres of disturbed land, requiring careful attention to both environmental stewardship and performance-driven design.

But the impact of this renovation extended far beyond the course itself. As part of the broader upgrade, UVA unveiled a state-of-the-art training and development facility, The Dean Family Golf Performance Center, to support the long-term success of its men’s and women’s golf programs. Timmons Group assisted with this project’s closeout which features indoor hitting bays, video analysis, and locker rooms and lounge space to support the student athletes and coaching staff.

With a legacy that dates back to 1906 for the men’s program and 2004 for the women’s, UVA Golf has built a reputation for competitive success—racking up several NCAA tournament appearances, individual MVPs, and championship titles along the way. That tradition reached a historic milestone in April 2025, when the UVA men’s golf team won their first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship. Just weeks later, they made their first appearance in the NCAA Championship match, finishing as national runner-up to Oklahoma State. The women’s team had a successful season, advancing to the match play portion of the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2016.

This year underscores the long-term vision behind the Birdwood renovation and training facility—creating a platform for elite competition and sustained excellence. We’re proud to have played a role in elevating one of Virginia’s most iconic collegiate golf courses, and look forward to continuing to support the University.
