Overview

Hidden Lake Dam is located within the Hidden Lake subdivision in northwest Stafford County and is situated on an unnamed tributary to Aquia Creek. Owned by the community association, the dam became State regulated in 2002 when the Virginia Impounding Regulations were amended to revise the definition of an “impounding structure”.

Timmons Group was contracted by Stafford County on behalf of the Hidden Lake Service District to evaluate the dam and determine the improvements necessary to get it into compliance with State Dam Safety regulations. Timmons Group provided inspection, analysis, geotechnical investigation, environmental permitting, engineering design and construction observation services to the County for the dam. The dam is 20 feet in height with a maximum storage capacity of 120 acre feet and is listed as a significant hazard structure with the Division of Dam Safety.

This project required innovative solutions to resolve the Dam Safety issues and required a bridge structure over the spillway channel to maintain access to the surrounding development.
