Overview

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) existing system for managing data associated with its conservation areas was not integrated with GIS and was based on legacy technology. MDC desired to deploy a new solution for managing its conservation area data, including features (e.g., trails, parking lots, etc.), seasons, regulations and restrictions, and alerts (e.g., closures).

Timmons Group worked with MDC to design and develop a web-mapping application, called Atlas, which serves as a portal for MDC land managers to edit spatial and non-spatial information associated with conservation areas. Once approved, information feeds other related solutions, including MDC’s Discover Nature website and MO Outdoors mobile app.

Atlas allows more than 100 users within MDC (including conservation area managers) to edit area details that are pushed out to users once approved via the web (Discover Nature) and mobile (MO Outdoors) solutions. The Atlas solution allows MDC to input, review, edit, and approve data associated with conservation areas in an expedient and streamlined manner for its citizens and visitors to access and enjoy, resulting in saved time, money, and improved service.
