Overview

Lake Caroline Dam is an earthen dam approximately 2,000 feet long and 48 feet high. Timmons Group was contracted to design the improvements necessary to protect Lake Caroline’s spillway after it was classified as a Class I hazard dam according to the Virginia Dam Safety Regulations. The Division of Dam Safety required improvements to the existing spillway to help prevent erosion from occurring during a major storm event.

The design improvements included construction of a concrete slurry wall placed on the existing bedrock within the spillway. Additional grading was performed along the dam to create a diversion berm to channel spillway water around the impoundment and discharge it safely downstream. Armoring was also used along the spillway for protection against surface erosion.
