Take a Walk in the Park Day: Mary B. Stratton Park

Today is Take a Walk in the Park Day! Celebrated annually on March 30, Take a Walk in the Park Day encourages individuals to spend time outdoors while promoting the physical and mental health benefits of walking. Let’s all take advantage of this day by putting on our walking shoes and heading to our nearest park, and if you happen to be in Chesterfield County, Virginia, check out the walking trails at Mary B. Stratton Park!

Timmons Group’s Richmond transportation design team worked with Chesterfield County to design the new Mary B. Stratton Park trail. Beginning at the Park’s parking area adjacent to the synthetic turf fields, the shared-use path continues approximately a half-mile through the central part of the property.

Timmons Group provided engineering and construction phase services for the project, including a half-mile-long sidewalk along Ridgedale Parkway and a shared-use path, providing continuous community connectivity to and throughout the County Park. The path meanders through steep terrain and forested areas and also features two stream crossings with 25’ and 50’ span bridges providing an overlook of the park’s natural setting.

Project development included specialized GIS survey work for the unique terrain, context-sensitive landscape architecture, detailed attention to environmental concerns, and design focused on specific community input. This project received Honorable Mention in the 2022 VTCA Engineering Awards for Projects under $10M Category.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s honor today by enjoying some fresh air and sunshine!
