Northside YMCA Celebrates New Renovations

Yesterday afternoon, Richmond, Virginia’s Northside YMCA celebrated the completion of their year-long renovations with a grand opening ceremony.

Located at 4207 Old Brook Road, the Northside YMCA has been serving the Northside community for over 100 years. Mayor Levar Stoney, YMCA of Greater Richmond’s President, Tim Joyce, and CEO of YMCA of the USA, Kevin Washington gathered with community members, staff and volunteers to celebrate this initiative that began in 2014.

The 39,578 SF renovation includes a new main entrance, new men, women, and family locker rooms, two studios for daily fitness classes, childcare space, teen center, seating lounge, a fitness space that is twice its original size, and new weights and machines.

In collaboration with KBS as the general contractor and Worley Associates Architects as the architect, Timmons Group provided civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture services for the project, including landscape design elements that enhance the prominent front entrance.

These elements included a simple evergreen plant palette design, bike racks, benches, and a unique combination of hardscape materials to incorporate different textures on site.

The YMCA’s mission includes building programs that promote healthy spirit, mind and body for all. As civil engineers and landscape architects, we live by a similar mission for each new project we help create. Like the Y, we strive to create dynamic places that combine beauty, economy and performance, and are inclusive to all.

In addition to the Northside YMCA renovations, Timmons Group also worked on the YMCA Petersburg renovations, which celebrated its grand opening this morning.
