Geotechnical Engineering & Testing
Every successful civil engineering project begins with a high-quality subsurface investigation program of the site, and Timmons Group’s Geotechnical Engineering team is responsible for overseeing these programs for a wide variety of projects.
During the field exploration phase of a project, we secure a Test Boring Contractor and provide full-time oversight and guidance in the field during the drilling work. Timmons Group’s skilled Geotechnical staff is able to modify the drilling program based on actual conditions in the field, and is able to characterize the subsurface conditions with strategically placed boreholes. The boring program allows us to evaluate conditions of the material in-situ and obtain soil samples for further testing.
During the analysis and reporting phase, we gather information from field and laboratory work and develop geotechnical recommendations. Timmons Group’s recommendations include all aspects of earthwork operations (fill and cut), shallow or deep foundation design, retaining wall design, pavement design and slope stability design. Our team is often able to identify potential pitfalls prior to beginning construction.
For projects that go to construction in Central Virginia, Timmons Group can provide Construction Materials Testing (CMT) in the form of soil compaction testing, concrete testing and masonry inspection for both full- and part-time applications. Timmons Group also can perform special inspections to comply with the International Building Code (IBC) 2006 edition.
Finally, Timmons Group also designs various types of segmental walls for commercial, highway and residential applications.
