Project Summary
This project involved the relocation and widening of approximately 3,500’ of Route 668 (Woolridge Road) in the western portion of Chesterfield County. It transformed a two-lane shoulder ditch roadway (originally constructed in the 1940’s) to a modern four lane divided, curb and gutter with raised median roadway in a high growth area of the County. This corridor is projected to carry approximately 25,000 vehicles per day within the next ten years. This section of VDOT roadway was discontinued for maintenance by the State back in the 1960’s when the County constructed their reservoir and inundated the surrounding property. From the late 60’s forward, the County had been responsible for the maintenance of this stretch of the roadway which has had very little freeboard between the normal water surface elevation and the roadway shoulder. Together with STV/Ralph Whitehead Associates, we designed this improved causeway with a 250’ long bridge to bring the roadway up to the current State standards so that it could be brought back into the State’s system for maintenance. The project involved turn lanes in the Genito Road intersection at one end, as well as signal adjustments at this intersection.
The project was the 2011 Overall Winner in the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA) Engineering Awards program. The annual award recognizes outstanding design and construction management work on transportation projects in Virginia.
