Overview

Timmons Group has worked with Apex Clean Energy for over 7 years on the development of the Rocky Forge Wind Project which will be the first onshore wind farm in Virginia. Studies and designs have been performed to support improvements of the State maintained road accessing the project. Detailed civil design of the project laydown area, O&M facility, substation and switchyard were also completed by Timmons. On-site design including access road/turbine pad grading, hydrologic analysis and E&S measures were performed with value engineering in mind. Full site development has involved many of Timmons’ service groups including zoning and Conditional Use Permit support, environmental studies, wetland delineations, survey of the onsite project and offsite transportation route, civil engineering design, and structural design of several bridges for site access.

Project Details:

  • Project size: Up to 75 MW (anticipated)
  • Power up to 20,000 U.S. homes
  • Existing high-voltage power lines and highways would limit the need for new infrastructure
  • Up to 20 wind turbines
  • Power will be delivered into the Virginia electrical grid

Rocky Forge Wind will represent a significant private investment in Botetourt County, boosting the local economy in the near term with construction jobs and local purchasing of materials and services. In the long term, the project promises to bring sustained tax revenue to the county for the local government and schools, as well as 30 years of local purchasing, employment, and investment.
