Overview

California Native Plant Society (CNPS) teamed with Timmons Group to develop an application to house the CNPS Manual of California Vegetation. The project included analysis of the existing MS Access database, migration of the database to a multi-user enterprise database, creation of a public-facing website, and associated data transfer and development tasks. A quick survey of the Manual provides users with an indication of the forest, shrub, herbaceous, and sparsely vegetated alliances in the state. The goal of this effort is to have California’s vegetation presented in a consistent and well organized fashion that will serve many purposes.

The website describes a state classification of vegetation developed by the CNPS in conjunction with the Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). It is a digital version of A Manual of California Vegetation, published by CNPS. The content in this website encompasses virtually all of the information in the book with a few exceptions, including seven of the nine chapters. These chapters provide background on the classification and foundations of this book and website.
