Project Summary
The replacement of the existing James Monroe High School was undertaken as a PPEA project by the First Choice team. This was a challenging project, as the existing high school was required to remain in operation during construction, while sharing the 24+/- acre site safely with construction crews. The first step of the required phasing was the relocation of the school’s completion baseball field to a site adjacent to the existing middle school. This move provided room for the construction of the new building, behind the existing school. The area for work was extremely tight, and close coordination between the design team and contractor was required to verify constructability. Following completion of the new building, the existing facility was demolished and the balance of the site work, including the parent drop off loop and sports fields was completed. The final product is a very functional and aesthetically pleasing school that sits naturally on the site and does not look to have been “forced” into place by the limitations of working around the existing building.
Timmons Group provided all survey, site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, environmental permitting and construction administration services for the project.
