Overview

Timmons Group partnered with Moseley Architects on the design of the new Douglass Elementary School. This new elementary school is Rockingham County Schools’ newest school building project. After Moseley Architects completed a feasibility study for the County on whether to renovate the Douglass Elementary School or construct a new facility, it was decided the best option for the County was to build a new prototype elementary school on the existing school’s site. The new elementary school replaces the outdated school building that was originally constructed in 1939. The new school was constructed in several phases while the existing school remained opened, housing its 475 students until the students and staff could be moved into the new facility. During the summer of 2011, the existing facilities were demolished excluding the central area of the original building that contains the auditorium, which now serves as a community center for the County.

Douglass Elementary School was awarded LEED Silver Certification in July of 2013. The school’s design targets silver level LEED certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Sustainable features of the building include a green roof, insulated windows, more energy-efficient heating and air conditioning system, drought-resistant plants, a plumbing system that reduces water consumption, a construction plan that called for the diversion of construction waste from landfills, the use of recycled materials in the building’s construction, an aggressive stormwater management system and the use of low emitting paints.
