Timmons Group is developing plans for the first wind farm in the state of Virginia in Botetourt County. In order to ensure safe transport of the wind turbines, which can be more than 500 feet tall, Timmons Group engineers had to analyze the small, winding, gravel road leading up the mountain to identify areas in need of improvement. After a structural analysis of two bridges on this road, it was determined that one bridge would require strengthening in order to carry the large loads transmitted by the trucks carrying wind turbine equipment.
Our structural engineering team developed a design for a temporary timber shoring system, converting the existing single span bridge into a continuous two-span structure. This configuration significantly increases the bridge’s load carrying capacity, allowing for the wind turbines to be safely carried across. Our engineers provided a design that can be easily constructed and uninstalled, along with being economically efficient.
