Chesterfield Airport

Project Summary

A grant from the Virginia Department of Aviation enabled a major gateway transformation for the Chesterfield County Airport. The design reflects the history, culture, and unique characteristics of Virginia’s Piedmont region.

An iconic monument sign welcomes visitors, and six clearly ordered zones are unified through signage, banner, lighting, and planting. The adjacent natural resource, Reedy Creek, creates an opportunity for a pocket ecosystem park; multi-use trails connect the existing Route 10 bikeway with Airfield Drive. An interactive observation area brings spectators into the experience of the airfield. Sculptural light fixtures express the concept of flight and together ,with the other streetscape elements, creates a sense of excitement about air travel.
