As the site of a former parking lot the Cape Fear Museum Park provides an outdoor learning environment for the museum including spaces conducive to hosting various groups and including exhibits about the Cape Fear region. A central focus of the park design are several sustainable features including a rain garden which accommodates storm water runoff for the entire site and provides habitat for pollinators and other native species.
We worked closely with museum staff, county and community representatives over a two day period to create a vision for the park focused on the intersections of land, water and people throughout the Cape Fear region.
In addition to being an outdoor learning environment, the park is also a public space. As a public space safety and security concerns were also addressed through the design using CPTED design principles. This project received an outstanding environmental stewardship award from the City of Wilmington.
