D. Hostetler, PE Principal, Education Services Steve Hostetler, PE is Principal of Timmons Group’s Education practice and is responsible for all aspects of K-12 and higher education projects. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Hostetler has been with the firm since 1989. Hostetler has been involved in the development of educational, governmental, healthcare and municipal buildings. About ten years ago, Hostetler was named Principal of the newly-formed Education sector and has since focused his attention to that market exclusively. Hostetler has always been drawn to the Education market and has developed a great knowledge of and passion for Educational facilities. As Hostetler says, “I have always enjoyed working on school projects, and K-12, in particular. “I like the nature of the projects. It’s something for the good of the community and it’s gratifying to see the impact that some of these facilities have had in their communities.” One of the more rewarding and technically challenging projects that Hostetler’s sector had the privilege of working on was the replacement of the James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This was an extremely challenging project to complete because the new high school had to be constructed on the old site while the kids were still using the old school. The site was a very small, so there was not much extra room to work with and phasing and constructability considerations were critical. As Hostetler says, “We were able to put the new facility on the old site and work with the architect and contractor to make the new facility very efficient so that it doesn’t look awkward at all. We did this while the kids were still in school and safe.” Another high school that the Education sector is currently working on is the new Fluvanna High School. This site has topographic and environmental features that need to be carefully managed. The design that Timmons Group is implementing is very creative and environmentally-friendly. This replacement of an old, outdated facility has been a long-term project for Hostetler and his team, having been involved with early concepts in the late 1990s all the way through to the anticipated construction completion and delivery date of 2011. This project is significant for the residents of Fluvanna County, since this is the only high school in the County. Hostetler believes that the success of the Education sector is attributed, in large part, to early due diligence and the discipline to follow a methodical design approach and quality assurance program. According to Hostetler, “significant due diligence is where we always begin.” With a methodical approach to projects, Hostetler’s team is able to eliminate many surprises before they occur and they can identify constraints that may potentially affect a project budget. According to Hostetler, “We are striving to make the site more than a place to park your car and have your class or ball games. We have invested a lot of time into educating ourselves about the specifics of a facility such as parent drop-off as well as stormwater features of a site.” |
