President & Chief Operating Officer

Brian Bortell, President and Chief Operating Officer at Timmons Group, has more than 20 years of experience in leading and developing technical teams to meet client’s needs and visions. As the President and Chief Operating Officer at Timmons Group, Brian is responsible for the overall day to day activities of the 300+ person consulting firm. In this capacity he ensures that Timmons Group places the talent and resources needed on project teams to exceed client’s expectations and ensure shared success. This includes oversight of each of the firms operating units as well as Finance, Accounting, Information Technology, Human Resources, Marketing, and Business Development.

Brian’s professional background includes project management, design, and implementation of infrastructure solutions for public and private companies, as well as State and Federal Government. He initially worked for the Virginia Department of Health in overseeing the construction and operation of collection, distribution, and pollution control facilities before joining Timmons Group in 1987.

Mr. Bortell graduated from Virginia Tech in 1985 where he received a BS in Civil Engineering and later went on to earn an MBA from Averett College in 1996. Mr. Bortell became a licensed professional engineer within the state of Virginia in 1989. He is involved in various professional and civic organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Water Pollution Control Federation, the American Water Works Association, the VA Society of Professional Engineers, American Council of Engineering Companies, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Midlothian Rotary. He is a 2004 graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond.
