Richmond, Va. – April 25, 2012 – Timmons Group, an ENR 500 Design Firm and a leader in engineering and technology consulting services, is proud to introduce High Definition Surveying and 3D Laser Scanning services to complement its full line of land surveying services.

Chris Dodson, Principal of the Field Operations Division says, “The incorporation of the Leica ScanStation C10 into our existing range of surveying equipment provides us the added versatility to take on any challenge.”

3D Laser Scanning sometimes referred to as High Definition Surveying (HDS) or ground based LIDAR, is a process by which large volumes of highly accurate data is captured at a rapid pace. This alternative method to traditional survey techniques is used to acquire data in the form of a 3-Dimensional cloud of points. The resulting point cloud contains millions of points collected at such a high resolution that shapes of complex objects can be measured with great detail. This new, fast and versatile scan system is capable of collecting up to 50,000 data points per second over a full field of view with accuracies measured in millimeters from a remote and safe location. This method is very beneficial for capturing data in congested, hazardous or hard to reach areas.

Timmons Group Master Plan Envisions Newest Park for City of Richmond’s James River Park System>

Richmond, Va. – April 24, 2012 – Timmons Group, an ENR 500 Design Firm and a leader in civil engineering and landscape architecture services, announced today that the firm has developed and presented a master plan for a new park for the City of Richmond’s James River Park System.

Tentatively referred to as Retention Basin Park based on its function as a basin for large stormwater events, the park will be the first new park added to the James River Park System in several years and is the missing link that connects Belle Isle, Browns Island, and the Slave Trail with the overall parks network. The design team sought to create an urban refuge for Richmond’s park lovers and Manchester’s residents. As a grand vision for the park, the master plan calls for a main loop trail with a bridge over the water that weaves through native wildflower meadows and allows for both passive and active recreation. Park goers can play bocce and croquet in the open lawn areas, sit quietly and read a book on a park bench, learn about the history of the site through interpretive signs, eat a picnic lunch by the water and even go for a run or exercise their dog.

This dynamic parcel of land was offered to the James River Park System by the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities. The property is bordered by the floodwall to the north, interstate 95 to the east, railroads to the south and west, and a major Dominion Power easement through the property. Surprisingly, despite restrictions, the site is an urban oasis—a real treasure nestled below the safety of the flood wall. Formerly part of the Manchester Canal system, the park focuses around a small waterway that is home to osprey, blue herons, wood ducks, fish, frogs and other local wildlife.

The idea for a project was cultivated by Baskervill Architects and Ralph White with the James River Park System. With promises of reaching out to the community at the Earth Day Festival in Richmond’s Manchester district, the focus was to assemble a team and deliver a master plan for a piece of city property located in the heart of Manchester. The team consisted of Timmons Group Landscape Architects and Engineers, Baskervill Architects, DPR Construction, RTB Structural Engineers, and the James River Park System. Each team member, native to the Richmond area, volunteered their professional services to assure that the design was evaluated from every perspective.

On April 21st, in conjunction with the Richmond Earth Day Festival, Mayor Dwight Jones and Ralph White dedicated the park to the City of Richmond. Future phases of the master plan will not be constructed until funding is appropriated and permitting is approved. Two interpretive signs and numerous bird houses were constructed and installed by volunteers from Timmons Group and the James River Park System.

Timmons Group Develops Geospatial Application for Virginia Department of Forestry That Allows>

Richmond, Va. – April 19, 2012 - Timmons Group, a leader in geospatial consulting and application development, recently developed a geospatial application for the Virginia Department of Forestry that allows Virginians to better evaluate how forest cover impacts water and air quality. The new tool is available online for anyone who is interested in learning about the effects of changing land use on a particular tract of forest or farm land in Virginia.

The application, called InFOREST, was developed for the Virginia Department of Forestry in partnership with Virginia Tech and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with funding from Dominion Virginia Power and a U.S. Forest Service grant.

“InFOREST will enable city and county planners, landowners or anyone interested in understanding how land-cover changes impact nutrient and sediment loading to our streams and rivers,” said Buck Kline, director of forestland conservation at the Virginia Department of Forestry. “Until now, this kind of information has been available primarily to individuals who are savvy enough to run models. InFOREST is a user-friendly software tool that enables many users to access and run the various models that estimate ecosystem services.”

Program users can do basic mapping and view various layers with InFOREST. These layers include: aerial imagery; topography; streets and roads; watershed boundaries, and a forest conservation value layer. In addition to mapping, users can estimate various ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration from forests and nutrient and sediment runoff from various land covers.

Taking information entered into the program by an individual, InFOREST uses a complex set of models to provide an estimate of ecosystem services associated with a proposed change of land use. Planners, landowners and citizens will be able to better determine how to mitigate any negative impacts that would result if the land use were changed.

Prof. Randolph Wynne at Virginia Tech said, “Using the MEASURES suite of ecosystem services tools developed by Virginia Tech for InFOREST, landowners, managers and diverse stakeholders can estimate the carbon sequestered and the sediment and nutrients delivered to receiving streams using scientifically vetted, best-of-breed models for a wide variety of land use and management scenarios.”
VDOF’s area forester in Spotsylvania County, Tom Snoddy, said, “I recently had an opportunity to look at InFOREST, and I think it will work well for landowners as well as consulting foresters and loggers. As with any new program, there is a learning curve, but I found the features of this program to be very user friendly.”

Karen Firehock, director of the Green Infrastructure Center Inc., said, "InFOREST is an easy-to-use, practical tool that anyone can apply to model different land-use scenarios to reduce pollution impacts. We've used the nutrient and sediment runoff calculator to show developers how to reduce their pollutant loadings by 50 percent and to show counties how to use the tool to help landowners to minimize impacts to drinking water reservoirs."

Lowell Ballard, Director of Geospatial Solutions for Timmons Group, said, “Timmons Group has been a proud partner in this important project. We believe InFOREST will be of great value to landowners, planners and developers as they work through difficult decisions regarding land use.”

Richmond, Va. – March 1, 2012 - Timmons Group, a leader in geospatial consulting and application development, recently developed and released a field inspection and data collection mobile application for Prince William County, Virginia. The solution is tablet-enabled and allows Prince William field staff to realize significant return on investment (ROI) by using their iPad2 tablets to streamline their daily inspection workflows. Approximately one thousand storm water management ponds needing recurring inspection are available via a GPS-enabled map interface. The application is intuitive, user-friendly and allows the field user to complete an inspection, set a recurring site visit date, and generate a reminder for the site visit on their personalized dashboard within a week of its re-inspection date.

The application bridges the gap between the office and the field by allowing citizen requests to be assigned to specific field users in real-time. It also allows users to work in an occasionally-connected or disconnected scenario where an internet connection is not available or limited. Inspection, site visit data, and associated geospatial field data (GPS’d or digitized in the field) can be saved on the tablet if an internet connection is not available. That data can be edited, deleted, or uploaded when a connection is available. The application also has an “in-office” component that allows Prince William County Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control management to produce “executive reports”, graphs, charts, and real-time field summary data.

The field mobile solution is built using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3 and is hosted in the cloud. The HTML5-based solution provides Prince William County’s Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control the flexibility to manage their application centrally without having to deploy to separate app stores. Field data is collected and stored in the cloud and can be downloaded, edited, and viewed in the County’s enterprise GIS at any time.

"With our old data collection system each field tech would spend about 7 hours a week doing data entry”, said Tim McGonegal M.S., Branch Chief, Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control with Prince William County Public Works. “This new system gives our technicians the ability to stay in the field for 7 hours doing mosquito control instead of data entry. This not only provides better service to our County citizens, but has also increased staff morale, as our field crews prefer working outdoors instead of in the office entering data.”

Videos of the application in action are available at webinars.timmonsgis.com.
