Monarch Opens First Youth Crisis Center in North Carolina

Charlotte, NC – January 31, 2018 – A ribbon cutting ceremony and reception marked the end of construction for the new SECU Youth Crisis Center at 1810 Back Creek Drive in Charlotte. Monarch employees, community members and state and federal officials gathered this morning to celebrate the opening of the 16-bed facility, the first of its kind in North Carolina that exists to help address the mental health needs of youth ages 6-17. The 11,654-square foot facility, provides access to timely, age-appropriate mental health care for families and children during a time of crisis.

Monarch is a non-profit organization in North Carolina that supports individuals with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. The agency provides services and support to people of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. Before the SECU Youth Crisis Center opened, children in the region facing a mental health crisis were sent as far as 250 miles from the Charlotte area for similar services.

Timmons Group teamed with architecture firm, Perkins + Will on the project to deliver civil engineering, landscape architecture, and construction administration services. Red Rock Developments was the national commercial developer for the project, Andujar served as the General Contractor, and Tripp Commercial was the Broker.

“To be able to work on a project that directly impacts the youth in our community is a special thing to be a part of,” said Brian Crutchfield, Principal of Timmons Group’s Charlotte office. “We hope that other organization model this type of facility and see the value it brings to communities and youth suffering from mental health.”

The SECU Youth Crisis Center was made possible by a onetime grant from the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation, Cardinal Innovations Healthcare, capital support from the general assembly, and several community partners.
