Charlotte, NC – October 4, 2017 – The Renaissance, a public housing community owned by the Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) and developed by Laurel Street Residential, received its LEED Neighborhood Development (ND) status this month. The LEED ND status is granted to sustainable well-connected neighborhoods that look beyond the buildings and consider entire communities. The Renaissance development offers a holistic approach to community change by providing recreational opportunities, a charter school and connectivity to surrounding city public transit options and amenities.
CHA replaced what was once a 300-housing unit, formerly known as Boulevard Homes, with 224 mixed-income family units onsite, 110 unit apartments for seniors, a charter school, an early childhood development center, a community center, job training, and youth and adult development programs. To unify the development with the surrounding City, the Renaissance is conveniently accessible to the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), West Boulevard Library, Stratford Richardson YMCA, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Southview Rec Center, and Central Piedmont Community College.
“The Renaissance has completely transformed the community,” said Brian Crutchfield, Principal of Timmons Group, who worked as the civil engineer on the job. “CHA took a different approach to public housing. The renovation provides a housing option to contribute to solving the affordable housing crisis, while also meeting the needs of residents. It was very important to CHA when beginning this process to consider surrounding amenities and connecting the residents to them whether by bike, on foot, or vehicle. Receiving the LEED ND status shows their success with the project.”
The Renaissance development was awarded $20.9 million in federal HOPE VI grant monies and another $12 million in state tax credits and city funds. Timmons Group was the civil engineer and surveyor on the project. Neighboring Concepts was the architect.
