Structures and Bridges Team Responds to Emergency Sidewalk Repair
May 16, 2017
If you walk down the sidewalk in front of City Hall in Petersburg, this might appear to be just your average sidewalk. However, in reality, this sidewalk is actually a structural concrete slab, spanning over an alley and a portion of the adjacent building’s basement.
Officials in Petersburg discovered that portions of the sidewalk were badly deteriorated, with missing concrete and corroded reinforcing steel. They immediately closed the sidewalk to pedestrians and called Timmons Group for assistance.
Within hours, our Structures Group was onsite to assess the condition of the sidewalk and determine repair options with the City Engineer. With the City’s approval to move forward with repairs, we developed plans and details for reconstruction of the sidewalk slab, and delivered the plans within five days. The repair work includes demolition and reconstruction of approximately 15 feet of sidewalk, repairs to the retaining wall supporting one side of the slab along W Tabb Street, and reconstruction of a support wall for a gate entry to a stairwell behind the sidewalk.
Throughout the duration of construction, Timmons Group was on-site to provide construction inspection and engineering services, during both demolition of the existing structure and construction of the replacement slab. During the course of construction, our structural engineers also developed a plan revision to accommodate the contractor’s formwork arrangement and prevent delay of project completion.
