Storytelling with Esri Story Maps
By: Mike Wiley
Every project tells a story here at Timmons Group. One way our Geospatial team tells these stories are through the use of Esri Story Maps. Story Maps allow you to create custom, easy to navigate responsive web applications that combine maps, images, narrative text and videos to better engage viewers through the stories that a map can tell.
Timmons Group recently created a Story Map for the City of North Miami (NoMi) Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in the sunny state of Florida. The state of Florida created a statute (163.371) in 2019 that states “each community redevelopment agency shall publish on its website digital maps that depict the geographic boundaries and total acreage of the community redevelopment agency.” The CRA saw this as an opportunity to take this mandate a few steps further and had Timmons Group create a website that combines feature-rich information to their residents.
By leveraging Story Maps and Operations Dashboard though Esri’s ArcGIS Online, Timmons Group created a configurable application for the CRA that contains live data, maps, and other resources to their community that relate to initiatives and projects throughout the City of North Miami. The application is easy to maintain and allows viewers the ability to view the rich photos of the CRA as well as interact with and explore the data in ways that had previously not been possible.
Esri’s Living Atlas data was used to enrich the existing CRA’s data to provide greater context of demographic profiles and lifestyle habits associated with the areas of the various projects, Opportunity Zones, and property-level and zoning data throughout the area.
Summary statistics were generated for areas surrounding the CRA’s projects and its Opportunity Zones. These summary statistics along with the authoritative demographic data add context and relevance to each area, completing the picture of the impact these projects have on the surrounding community.
