Revitalizing the City of Baltimore, One Field at a Time

As the days get shorter and colder, many of us will let our minds wander to warmer days. For some, those days will be spent at the beach, the mountains or maybe a baseball field. For kids in west Baltimore, warm days will be perfect for baseball. Thanks to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, the Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park was dedicated on November 15, 2017, located behind James Mosher Elementary. The dedication brought together baseball royalty, former Orioles Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken, Jr., the local community and the folks that brought the field to life.

This site for this field had a unique challenge because it sits within the Gwynns Falls, a stream entering the city of Baltimore and emptying into the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. The design requirements for this watershed were to retain the 100-year flood.

Timmons Group was brought in to provide stream and erosion sediment control services for the site — services that address the collection and treatment of water quality and quantity. Timmons Group engineers relied on low impact development practices for stormwater management to treat and contain the water, right where it falls. Thus, making the soils suitable for infiltration. The Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park features a synthetic surf baseball diamond, dugouts, a backstop and a digital scoreboard. The field required less maintenance than a regular field and allows for year-round use.

Working on these types of projects is special because it reminds us that we all have a role to play in helping to improve the community and the environment.

The Eddie Murray Field at BGE Park is just one of a few fields the firm is working on; others include Brooks Robinson Field and Farring-Baybrook Park, in Baltimore.
