Timmons Group Landscape Architects partnered with Enteros Design on the Petersburg Library, located prominently along Washington Street. Petersburg Library is located in the heart of downtown and is a collaborative effort between the built and natural environment that culminates in a holistic site experience.
Working closely with the architect’s concept, the design molds the library with regional elements inspired by the falls of the Appomattox River. The River is represented in the rear bluestone terrace transitioning down to a “river basin” plaza by way of a two-tiered waterfall.
There are multiple gardens located throughout the site representing regional eco-types: pine forest, meadow, and xeriscaping. Smaller spaces adjacent to the building allow the owner flexibility to create interpretive and demonstration gardens for the visitors.
Nine outdoor learning landscapes have been modeled on regional ecosystems including river basin, pine forest, riparian buffers, and prairie meadow, with additional areas for a wildlife habitat garden, and a model for xeriscaping. Each of these vignettes will utilize primarily native and drought-tolerant species in accordance with LEED practices.
