Picture This: Library Story Park

Located on a prominent corner of downtown Wilmington and at the front door to the county’s main library, Library Story Park reinvented this urban space for public use as well as providing a designated area for library programs and events.
This property has been a public space for twenty years. Following adjacent construction of a county parking deck in 2003, the space began to decay and was perceived as unsafe. In 2016, our Landscape Architecture team in Raleigh was tasked with reinventing the area outside of the library to create a space that supported educational activities and opportunities while being available to the general public. They focused on removing safety concerns to define a welcoming streetscape and entry sequence to the front door.
Our team provided the following services: master planning, permitting, preparation of construction documents, and construction administration.
The space provides areas particularly for children. The primary gathering and performance space is situated away from the streets and is enclosed by garden areas featuring pollinators, edibles and native plants. The team included a sustainable approach to stormwater which is now managed by permeable paving in the streetscape and a rain garden at the corner. A bike corral was incorporated on Chestnut Street.
