Arbor Day at VSU: A Continuing Tradition

Bonnie Dunkel By: Bonnie Dunkel

In the spirit of both Arbor Day and Earth Day, the Timmons Group stormwater team spent its third year in a row planting trees and maintaining multiple Filterra treatment systems on Virginia State University’s campus.

What is a Filterra Treatment System?

The Filterra treatment system is a manufactured bioretention stormwater best management practice (BMP) that filters stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces.  The system is filled with Filterra engineered media: a specified gradation of washed aggregate and organic material used to remove pollutants.

These systems are cost effective, easy to install, and take up little space. They are typically used on highly developed sites like parking lots and streetscapes.

In addition to the initial site plan design of the Filterra treatment systems, our stormwater team returns to VSU on a regular basis to maintain the functionality of the systems.

Timmons Group staff assisted volunteers in planting trees and clearing debris, silt and leaves to help maintain the quality and longevity of the Filterra systems.
