October 18, 2006 Timmons Group Partners with Chesterfield Schools for Addition of GIS Curriculum FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information contact: Richmond, VA – October 18, 2006 - Timmons Group has partnered with Chesterfield County Technical Center (CCTC), a part of the Chesterfield County School System, to expand the Center’s technology curriculum to include a class in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In its inaugural year, the 15-18 students enrolled in the course will receive an introduction to the opportunities available within the Geospatial Sciences arena. Russell Minich, Principal in Timmons Group’s Technology Sector, was responsible for developing the course, having previously helped define Geospatial Sciences for inclusion in the State’s Standards of Learning (SOL) curriculum. Tenth-grade students had the opportunity to listen to Minich’s presentation which outlined the background of Geospatial Technology, including geospatial utilization in public safety, emergency response, natural resource management, military planning, medical imagery, homeland security and telecommunications. Prior to the introduction of GIS into the Chesterfield curriculum, students had the option of taking AutoCAD and Oracle classes. Now, in the revised course offering, the AutoCAD component has been combined with GIS, offering students a wider educational scope that Minich and Chesterfield organizers are certain will result in increased opportunities for the students. In addition, CCTC students are interning with the Timmons Group Technology Sector in order to supplement their classroom studies with real-world experiences. “Spending time in a work environment will offer the students the ability to see how a business really runs,” said Minich. “The students will learn how database and programming skills learned in the classroom are used to provide user-driven business solutions.” “With the support of Minich and Timmons Group, they’ve made it possible for students to combine an education in GIS and Oracle,” said Dorcus Yeager, School Counselor for the Chesterfield Technology Center. “Having these skills will really open up a world of possibilities for our students.” About Timmons Group |
