Butner Federal Correctional Institution Receives 2007 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award

Richmond, VA – March 5, 2007 – Timmons Group is proud to have been a member of the design-build team for the Butner Federal Correctional Institution project selected by The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) as one of the winners of this Award that is given to project that epitomize the true spirit of partnering. Seven winners and two special recognition projects were selected. The AGC President will present the awards to all winners at an awards luncheon on March 21, 2007 at noon, in conjunction with AGC’s annual convention in San Antonio, Texas.

This design-build project included all architectural, engineering, construction, project management, quality control and other related services necessary to design and build this medium-security federal correctional institution. This project was a joint design-build project between Hensel Phelps Construction Company and Moseley Architects of Richmond, Virginia. McKissack and McKissack was the Construction Manager and Timmons Group provided civil engineering services. Additional team members included: Venderweil Engineers; Strong Pence & Associates, Ltd.; Diversified Consulting Group; Watson Electrical Contractor Co.; John J. Kirlin, Inc.; Florence Concrete Products, Inc.; Norment Security Group, Inc.; East Coast Fire Protection, Inc.; Ambassador Technologies, Inc. and Pitzrick & Associates, Inc. The project’s owner, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, is a proponent of the partnering process and worked closely with the team to update the Bureau’s Technical Design Guidelines to reflect current trends toward environmental sustainability.

This project received LEED® Certification Level "Certified" on June 13, 2006 by the U.S. Green Building Council. The institution was also the first Bureau facility to receive LEED® certification, as well as the first LEED® certified correctional institution in the U.S.
