Virtually every successful civil engineering project begins with a high quality subsurface investigation program of the site. In support of the other Sectors, the Geotechnical Engineering practice at Timmons Group is responsible for overseeing these subsurface investigation programs for a wide variety of projects.

During the field exploration phase of the project, we secure the services of a test boring contractor and provide full-time oversight and guidance in the field during the drilling work. Timmons Group has experienced geotechnical staff that is able to modify the drilling program as necessary based on actual conditions that arise in the field. We are able to characterize the soil and rock conditions by way of strategically placed boreholes. The boring program allows us to evaluate the conditions of the material in-situ and to obtain soil and rock samples for further testing.

As part of the second phase (laboratory testing), Timmons Group performs a multitude of tests that help us better classify the soil and rock, in addition to helping us estimate the shear strength and compressibility parameters of the material.

During the analysis and reporting phase, we gather the information from the field and laboratory work and develop geotechnical recommendations. Timmons Group’s recommendations pertain to all aspects of earthwork operations (fill and cut), shallow or deep foundation design, retaining wall design, pavement design, earth dam design and slope stability design. We often are able to identify potential construction pitfalls about which an owner or contractor needs to be aware prior to beginning construction.

The final phase (construction monitoring) allows us to help make sure our geotechnical recommendations are understood and followed by the contractor.  Also, if unforeseen field issues arise, we are well prepared to make modifications to our original recommendations, for a seamless and successful conclusion to the project.
